2016 season

After a period of uncertainty for all of us, the Museum has tentatively started planning for the future. We’re looking forward again to welcoming visitors from near and far.

Our first 'Open Sunday' is planned for Easter Sunday, 17th April 2022.

Following that, if it continues to be possible, the Museum plans to return to its usual 'Open Sundays" approach and be open for visitors to look around on the third Sunday of each month until the Autumn.

Special Events are on our radar too. We are already planning to take part in one of the 'National Heritage Week' days as, rather conveniently, the 18th of  September is one of the days the Museum hopes to be open. The Heritage theme this year is ‘Astounding Inventions’ and the Museum certainly has plenty of examples of those, from the wheel to the internal combustion engine. We are looking at whether we can combine this Heritage Day activity with one of our Canvey History Trail events, which includes historical commentaries relating to Canvey Island. Pre-pandemic, these were very popular with visitors such that we had to add extra buses to the free 'Island Circuit' ride to avoid disappointment.

We are also investigating how and where we can run a traditional Bus Rally event, though this has become less easy on Canvey Island because of changes and developments to the sites we have traditionally used.

The Museum Committee is also looking as far ahead as Spring 2023 when, all being well, we hope to stage another of our Model Railway and Craft Fair events. We had originally scheduled one for April 2020 but of course this had to be cancelled. As well as the large and detailed model railway layout belonging to the Museum, we would plan to feature a number of visiting layouts, as well as related transport memorabilia stalls and a multitude of craft stalls to suit all tastes.

Canvey Island Transport Museum has many members who support its work in all sorts of different ways, and we’re always keen to encourage new members to join us. If being a member of the Society that runs the Museum appeals to you, then please contact us at

We look forward to welcoming you to our Museum again in the very near future!
